VERO BEACH, FL, UNITED STATES, March 13, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — The current Trump administration has made immigration a central topic since the last Presidential race. While immigrants have often come to the United States for a better life, they are working even harder today. As the Accent Coach, Claudette Roche says, language skills have become an even more essential component of education so immigrants do not stand out.
As Roche explains, education has often been one of the main reasons for people to immigrate to America with the numerous learning opportunities on campuses and through adult classes. The ability to speak English has increasingly become important so they can communicate with others in their neighborhood. However, in today's political climate, it is often not enough to learn to speak English. Roche says the focus is being able to speak it like a native.
"English is a complex language, and immigrants have been happy to learn how to speak it well enough to get by," Roche explains. "However, more are seeking to get rid of their accents so they sound just like a native-born." The hope is that it will call less attention to their immigrant status if they sound like they were born in America.
Because of the interest in learning to speak without an accent, more immigrants are hiring accent reduction coaches like Roche. "While you can learn to speak English on your own, it's more difficult to learn how to enunciate without a teacher to explain what you’re doing wrong." Roche says that an accent reduction coach must show students how to form their sounds by using their mouth correctly. People from the same nationality often have the same issues because they speak the same way. For instance, a person whose native language is Spanish will often turn the sound of "j" into "y." Roche's job is to show them how to hold their tongues so that the correct sound comes out.
Another reason for the growth of accent reduction classes and coaches is the changes to how business is conducted. Many companies will provide products or services to people in other cities or states. To be well-understood, clear communication is the key. People with accents who want to be promoted will seek to reduce their accent which often translates into fewer communication errors.
"It's not always true that people with accents are more difficult to understand," Roche is quick to explain. "But the perception is still there. These job applicants want to be competitive for the best jobs, and they don't want their accents to get in the way." Many of them look at it as honing their skills just like learning a software program.
The goal for Roche in her role as the Accent Coach is to help people learn to speak clearly and enunciate their words to be better understood. She wants to assist them with living out their dreams and meeting their goals in a world where communication is essential to get ahead.
