A budget will help determine the perfect candidates and assist in choosing between a small specialized team (which is likely to cost more) or a larger group (who may not have as much experience). Not all managers know how to work within their budget, but George Portes says that staying within a budget is a hallmark of any quality event manager.

Next, he advises using people or groups who you’ve worked with in the past to staff an event. This firsthand experience of the staff’s success or failures will give hiring managers more peace of mind and will help ensure they deliver exactly what’s expected.

However, hiring staff that a manager has worked with in the past isn’t always an option. In those circumstances, George Portes suggests seeking out recommendations from other event groups or professional connections. Hiring this way will lend more credibility to the candidates and will help managers staff a crew with proven experience that can undoubtedly meet expectations.

Lastly, George Portes advises that all candidates undergo a thorough interviewing process. He suggests asking about the events they’ve worked on in the past, whether they’ve worked independently or on a team, whether they have experience with task management software or technology, and their availability among other things.

“Really get to know your candidates in the interviews,” says George Portes, “and make sure no questions go unasked. When it’s time for the event, the staff’s performance will be reflected mostly on the event managers so you’ll want to go in knowing you have a truly professional team behind you.”

In addition to honoring women leaders, the luncheon features the APCH GirlPower girls who are graduating from the annual GirlPower program. GirlPower is a 10-month rites of passage program that empowers young women, ages 14-18, to overcome societal stereotypes and traditional gender roles, to stand up for themselves and advocate for others, and to pursue their aspirations with rigor and vigor. The 2019 award recipients include Nadia Allaudin, Senior Vice President and Wealth Management Advisor for Merrill Lynch Global Wealth Management; Nichol Whiteman, CEO of the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation (LADF); and Marci Wiseman, Co-President of Blumhouse Television.

Allaudin is the founder of the annual Women, Wealth & Wisdom Conference in Los Angeles. She will receive the Women’s Empowerment Award for her commitment to equity and independence for all women.

Whiteman will receive the Community Impact Award for her dedication to improving the lives of youth and families. Under her leadership, LADF launched Dodgers RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities), a youth development program serving over 10,000 youth.

Wiseman has been instrumental in starting three independent television studios, including Blumhouse Television, which produced the awarding-winning HBO series “Sharp Objects.” She has been a longtime supporter of the college scholarship program at APCH. Wiseman will receive the Media Role Model Award for her leadership in the entertainment industry.

APCH will also recognize social justice activist Edna Chavez with the GirlPower Choice Award. Chavez, a supporter of immigrant rights and survivor of gun violence, headlined and delivered a powerful speech in 2018 at the March for Our Lives rally in Washington, D.C.

Prior to the luncheon program, attendees will have the opportunity to support independent businesses at the GirlPower boutique. Nearly two dozen vendors, ranging from fashion to children’s products to skin care, will come together for a one of a kind shopping experience.
