Vietnam Outlaws Prolonged Unskippable Ads on YouTube
Global users have voiced mounting frustration in recent weeks regarding extended non-skippable commercials on YouTube, with numerous reports describing mandatory viewing of advertisements stretching an hour or beyond.
Under the revised Vietnamese advertising statutes, the mandatory wait period before viewers can bypass video promotions cannot surpass five seconds, while non-video advertisements must allow instant dismissal.
The reforms further mandate that platforms deliver transparent, uncomplicated closure mechanisms requiring just a single click, and prohibit deceptive or ambiguous exit buttons designed to mislead audiences.
Platforms have also been ordered to provide consumers with easily accessible means to report ads that violate the law, according to the amendments.
The legislation simultaneously strengthens restrictions governing promotions for 11 categories of products and services with direct environmental and public health implications. These classifications encompass cosmetics, food, alcoholic drinks, pharmaceuticals, and others.
Responding to media inquiries about escalating grievances over marathon unskippable commercials, YouTube parent company Google stated it caps such advertisements at 15 seconds maximum on mobile devices and 60 seconds on television platforms. The tech giant attributed exceptionally lengthy promotional footage to audiences utilizing substandard ad-blocking applications that malfunction and corrupt viewing quality.
"Ads are a vital lifeline for our creators that helps them run and grow their businesses," Google said. It called upon viewers "to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium for an ad free experience."
